In brief
In some vehicle technical documents, SBE denotes seat occupancy detection. A printed film can be one sensor component, but its meaning and acceptance criteria are vehicle-specific.
What does SBE mean?
BMW technical training for the F23 labels European-version seat occupancy detection as SBE and distinguishes it from the US CIS system. Here SBE names a vehicle function, not a universal printing method. Confirm the abbreviation in each customer specification.
What can a printed film do?
A film sensor may use patterned electrodes, contacts or other sensing features to produce an occupancy-related signal. Screen printing deposits patterned materials on flexible substrates, but ink, film, cure and lamination must be designed together. Henkel lists silver, carbon and dielectric materials for flexible circuits and sensors; material choice changes both electrical behavior and the processing window.
What inputs drive equipment selection?
Provide film type and thickness, image area, layer count, target feature geometry, registration tolerance, ink data sheets, curing profile, connector design and annual volume. CCD-aligned sheet printing may suit discrete parts, while roll-to-roll printing may suit continuous film. LICHAO equipment specifications support an initial review, not an SBE certification claim.
What closes the validation loop?
Check dimensions, opens and shorts, resistance distribution and adhesion after printing; repeat after lamination and after integration with foam, trim, harness and controller. Test across occupant loads, postures and environments. The vehicle customer must validate any safety-related system function to its program requirements.
